Brightening Life with Creativity,
one day at a time...
Ever seen any fabric like the piece above? Well you might have seen something similar, but probably not exactly like it, because it the result of some experimenting I did this past weekend! :-)
I enjoy dyeing my own fabric and I have worked a lot with different techniques to achieve some interesting visual textures, but I decided to try my hand at some surface design work.
My family and I love scrounging garage and estate sales, flea markets and the like for "new to us" simple treasures and sometimes I stumble across some neat kitchen gadgets. Know where I'm going with this? :-)
I started out by dyeing some fat quarters of PFD fabric in some bright and lovely hues. Then I grabbed my textile acrylics and some vintage kitchen utensils and "played".
I achieved a bubble looking print by using the metal springy thing above. (Like the technical terminology?) I believe it is either some sort of whisk or an egg separator. Either way, that's not what I will be using it for. ;-)
Then I used a pasta cutter to create some great lines. I actually started out my going horizontal and then went back and did some vertical lines to make a great grid pattern. Sorry I didn't get a picture of that, but no worries... You'll see the finished fabric in a project very soon! My son said it reminded him of a radar screen!
And last but not least, I used an old pastry blender to create these whispy sweeps! So what are you going to experiment with? I bet you'll never look at your kitchen gadgets the same way again! :-)
