SAQA requested that members consider making small (6 x 8") works of fiber art to donate to the silent auction held at the national convention in Lincoln, Nebraska this April. All of the proceeds go to benefit future exhibitions. Flashy Coneflower is my contribution. :) I chose a piece of monoprinted Cut-Away Plus from my stash and drew a simple coneflower on it.
Next, I made a quilt sandwich with a piece of 80/20 quilt batting and another piece of stabilizer. Using a selection of Sulky 12 wt blendables, I thread painted through the sandwich. These pieces will be matted, so they requested they be finished with straight stitching to eliminate the bulk. I love the colors and the finished result! I hope it will fetch some good $ for the cause! :)

So can you only make art with the monoprinted Sulky Cut-Away Plus? After all, it's not like it's fabric that you can make a cozy quilt out of. Well, the short answer is, no! There are all sorts of possibilities! Here's an example: I chose two printed pieces from my stash. I layered each with some 80/20 batting and a coordinating solid backing fabric. Using some quick free-motion stitching and some Sulky 30 wt cotton thread, the stabilizer quilt sandwiches were done in no time. Here's what I turned them into: I just added a zipper to each sandwich and sewed up the other three sides
and now I have two cute zippered pouches! The stabilizer is very durable and the paint doesn't flake off even when you stitch through it. The pouches are flexible, but not floppy, so any items stored inside have more protection. Need some other ideas of what to use the monoprinted stabilizer on? How about journal covers, needle books, or book and tablet covers? Have fun and see what you can come up with! |
