"The Alzheimer's Association is the leading, global voluntary health organization in Alzheimer's care and support, and the largest private, nonprofit funder of Alzheimer's research." (source: http://alz.org) I first became familiar with this organization back in the fall and knew that I wanted to get involved in some way. As it turns out, our local chapter has a silent auction in March. I made the piece at left as a donation for the auction. (As with most art, the pictures don't really show the detail or color well, but it will give you an idea.) Here is the artist statement I wrote for this piece: Always Remember Those Who Forget tells a personal story. The three Forget-me-not flowers symbolize my three family members who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. One of those, my grandmother, lost the battle with this horrific disease years ago, and I still miss her. The background stitching meanders around the flowers, showing the mental confusion that results when Alzheimer’s steals a person’s clarity and memory. On top of those stitches, metallic ribbons dance and intertwine, representing the hope we all have for a cure. The picture above on the right and this one to the left show some of the detail in this piece. It measures approximately 18" square and is valued at $325.00. I hope it will go for more than that since all the proceeds go to benefit the Alzheimer's Association! A big thank you to the generous folks at Sulky who continue to sponsor my work. They enable me to create the images I picture in my mind and in turn help important causes with their beautiful threads and wonderful stabilizers!
