Kelly Nagel at Sulky asked that I come up with something for their booth at the Houston Market using Cut-Away Plus and the printing techniques I've been working on. The Sulky team had already picked an old fashioned candy shop theme, using pink and turquoise. I decided to make some pennants, spelling out S-U-L-K-Y. I cut some of the Cut-Away Plus into equal and similar triangles, so I could do some layering and play up the color scheme. While all the pieces were drying thoroughly, I printed out some large, blocky letters that I could trace around as stencils on the turquoise scraps. Machine time! I used the Sulky 12 wt cotton thread in opposite colors so that the stitches would really show up well. The Cut-Away Plus gave each pennant enough body that the stitching was a breeze, with no tension issues. Kelly had some trim she had already purchased to go with the theme, so she sewed it to the top of each triangle. Thanks to the stabilizer, the pennants were heavy enough to drape well and wouldn't flip easily. Here's the finished product at the booth: I can see myself making pennants again with the Cut-Away Plus and printing...
maybe even for Thanksgiving or Christmas! :-)

Earlier this year, I started mounting some of my smaller fiber art pieces on artist canvases. You can read more about that here and here. Lately, I've had a great time monoprinting on Sulky Cut-Away Plus with homemade gelatin plates and I've made a few of my own stamps to use with the printing. So what happens when you add all of that up? This: The Power of the Unspoken Word. 12 x 12" Monoprinted with acrylic on polyester, hand and machine stitched, mounted on artist canvas And this: Eating Crow. 9 x 12" Monoprinted with acrylic on polyester, hand and machine stitched, mounted on artist canvas Printing, stamping, painting and stitching!
The combinations and possibilities are limitless! Have you tried any of these techniques yet? |
