Remember the piece I donated for the Alzheimer's Association? Well....it sold and has found a wonderful home! The story is a neat one, with far too many twists and turns to share all of it here, but here's a very brief summary. Before I delivered the piece to the local Alzheimer's Association office, I prayed that it would not only sell, but that it would go to a good home and would bless the life of the new owner in some way. God truly answered my prayer! Little did I know, it would go to a friend who has watched her mother suffer with this terrible disease for years. In fact, the piece arrived on her doorstep while she was visiting with her mother! I don't know why I am so surprised when God answers my prayers. Or maybe, its just that I'm surprised to see His plan unfold before my eyes. That has been happening a lot in my family's life lately and it is such a blessing! All too often, I see how God has worked things out in my life in hindsight. This time around its so neat to see His hand right beside me or in front of me clearing the way.

"The Alzheimer's Association is the leading, global voluntary health organization in Alzheimer's care and support, and the largest private, nonprofit funder of Alzheimer's research." (source: http://alz.org) I first became familiar with this organization back in the fall and knew that I wanted to get involved in some way. As it turns out, our local chapter has a silent auction in March. I made the piece at left as a donation for the auction. (As with most art, the pictures don't really show the detail or color well, but it will give you an idea.) Here is the artist statement I wrote for this piece: Always Remember Those Who Forget tells a personal story. The three Forget-me-not flowers symbolize my three family members who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. One of those, my grandmother, lost the battle with this horrific disease years ago, and I still miss her. The background stitching meanders around the flowers, showing the mental confusion that results when Alzheimer’s steals a person’s clarity and memory. On top of those stitches, metallic ribbons dance and intertwine, representing the hope we all have for a cure. The picture above on the right and this one to the left show some of the detail in this piece. It measures approximately 18" square and is valued at $325.00. I hope it will go for more than that since all the proceeds go to benefit the Alzheimer's Association! A big thank you to the generous folks at Sulky who continue to sponsor my work. They enable me to create the images I picture in my mind and in turn help important causes with their beautiful threads and wonderful stabilizers! |
